{"id":191,"date":"2013-08-06T00:45:27","date_gmt":"2013-08-06T00:45:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/digitalchild.info\/?p=191"},"modified":"2013-08-06T00:45:27","modified_gmt":"2013-08-06T00:45:27","slug":"vmware-vcenter-server-appliance-wildcard-ssl-not-supported","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/randomadult.local\/vmware-vcenter-server-appliance-wildcard-ssl-not-supported\/","title":{"rendered":"VMware vCenter Server Appliance Wildcard SSL Not Supported"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We use the <a title=\"vCenter Virtual Appliance\" href=\"http:\/\/kb.vmware.com\/selfservice\/microsites\/search.do?language=en_US&amp;cmd=displayKC&amp;externalId=2005086\">vCenter Server Appliance<\/a> which is an all in one SUSE Linux based appliance that is setup to run vCenter server in small environments.There are a few limitations with the appliance and they include<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Embedded database &#8211; 5 hosts &amp; 50 Virtual Machines<\/li>\n<li>No update Manager<\/li>\n<li>vSphere Storage appliance is not supported<\/li>\n<li>vSphere\u00a0converter stand alone is not supported<\/li>\n<li>vCli is not supported<\/li>\n<li>vPowerCLI is not supported because you need PowerShell which is only available in windows<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Even with these limitations the appliance is perfect for the SMB market. If you need more you can hook it up to an Oracle database.<\/p>\n<p>Like many people out there using\u00a0<a title=\"vCSA\" href=\"http:\/\/kb.vmware.com\/selfservice\/microsites\/search.do?language=en_US&amp;cmd=displayKC&amp;externalId=2005086\">VMware vCenter Server Appliance<\/a>\u00a0 you might want to use a CA certified SSL certificate on your server.\u00a0VMware does have a <a title=\"Configuring certificates signed by a Certificate Authority (CA) for vCenter Server Appliance 5.1 (2036744)\" href=\"http:\/\/kb.vmware.com\/selfservice\/microsites\/search.do?language=en_US&amp;cmd=displayKC&amp;externalId=2036744\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">great document<\/a> on how to prepare your server for CA signed certificates in which it highlights that <strong>wildcard SSL is not supported<\/strong>. It&#8217;s got a great step by step guide on how to do this. It does have a few steps that were difficult to understand because it references file system layouts that aren&#8217;t explained. I found the missing links after reading <a title=\"vCenter Management Appliance 5.1 Certificates\" href=\"http:\/\/www.goitpartners.com\/blog\/?p=623\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a post by Doug Baer<\/a>\u00a0that gives a really straightforward explanation of how to go about setting up the SSL certificates. I would recommend Doug&#8217;s article over the VMware one. It turns out you have to create 7 yes SEVEN CSR&#8217;s to get the certificates for the appliance.
