There’s something to be said about having a nice workspace with an environment that feels cosy. As a software developer who hasn’t focused much on overall office comfort beyond a chair and decent monitor, I’ve recently upgraded my setup. Here’s a detailed look at my current desk setup, optimized for productivity and comfort. I call this my ultimate developer workspace.

The Daily Driver: MacBook Pro for Optimal Developer Workflow

Most of my time is spent building web backend and frontend applications, I find macOS indispensable for my workflow. My current setup features a 2021 14″ MacBook Pro in clamshell mode. Here’s why it’s perfect for my needs:

  • Long-lasting performance: My MacBooks typically serve me for 6+ years
  • Consistent reliability: I’ve been a Mac user since the 2001 release of OS X
  • Specs for seamless development:
    • 14″ M1 Max Apple MacBook Pro
    • 32GB RAM
    • 1TB SSD
    • Additional 2TB Samsung 980 Pro SSD in an Orico USB4 enclosure

Most of my machines have been amazing, lasting quite a long time. Interestingly, my 2012 MacBook Air is still going strong, despite its age. In fact, it has found a new purpose in my family. Currently, my sister-in-law is using it for her university studies.

The same can be said for my Dell XPS 15″ 9560 minus the fact that the entire top case was affected by humidity and turned into a sticky mess. I was able to fix this by getting a carbon wrap and wrapping the entire thing. This machine lives at home and I primarily use it for my online study.

Essential Peripherals for Enhanced Productivity

To complement my MacBook Pro, I’ve carefully selected peripherals that boost my productivity:

  • Logitech MX BRIO 4K webcam for crystal-clear video calls
  • Logitech MX Master 3s mouse for ergonomic comfort
  • Keychron K3 Pro low-profile keyboard for efficient typing
  • LG 32″ Ultrafine Ergo Display for expansive screen real estate
  • Kanto Ora reference desktop speakers with SE2 stands for immersive audio
  • Kanto Sub8 subwoofer for rich, deep sound
  • Yeti Blue Nano microphone for clear audio input

The display, keyboard. Mouse and webcam are all shared between my laptop and my PC.

 Dual-Purpose Setup Development and Gaming

Although my primary focus is development, I’ve nevertheless incorporated a custom PC into my setup. Initially, I didn’t have a pressing need for this machine. However, when a friend offered it at an unbelievably low price, I couldn’t resist. Consequently, this powerful rig now serves a dual purpose: not only does it cater to my occasional gaming sessions, but it also enables me to conduct various AI experiments. As a result, I’ve expanded my technological capabilities without breaking the bank. The majority of the AI workloads are things that are only available if you have an Nvidia GPU.

  • Intel i5 13400 CPU (with plans to upgrade to i7)
  • Asus ROG STRIX Z790-I mainboard
  • 32GB RAM
  • 2TB Samsung 980 Pro SSD
  • GTX 4060 Ti GPU

Future upgrade plans include an AIO water cooler for better thermal management.

Ergonomic Desk and Chair: The Foundation of Comfort

My workspace is built on locally sourced, high-quality furniture. I’ve had my desk for over 7 years and my chair was upgraded last year. Herman millers here cost more than a top of the range Mac Studio and to be honest, the one I have is great. They come from these two amazing local suppliers.

  • Custom-built desk by The City (Vietnam)
  • Ergonomic office chair from D’Furni (Vietnam)

Accessories for the Perfect Finishing Touch

To complete my setup, I’ve added these thoughtful accessories:

  • Desk mat from Lavie Legend (local Vietnamese brand)
  • Yeelight screen light bar monitor pro with control puck for optimal lighting

Conclusion

There are two things left that I would like to add to complete this setup. That is a new clamshell stand for my laptop to place it next to my PC. The second item would be upgrading my dock to a thunderbolt 4 dock. The current dock is limited on ports, power and most things, and it has a tendency to heat up badly. Then I can say that my ultimate developer workspace will be complete.

This carefully curated desk setup has significantly improved my productivity and comfort as a software developer. By focusing on high-quality, ergonomic equipment and local craftsmanship, I’ve created a workspace that supports long coding sessions and creative problem-solving. The speakers allow me to listen to all kind of music with great fidelity, as well as watch videos and the occasional gaming session.
